FILM FESTIVAL HONOREE TIES KNOT AT HOME

October 12th, 2000

MALIBU, Calif. Oscar-winning actor Rod Steiger, who will appear at the Reno Film Festival on Friday, has married actress Joan Benedict.

Steiger, who won the best actor Academy Award for his role as a small-town sheriff in the film In the Heat of the Night, married Benedict on Tuesday at his home. About 30 people attended the ceremony. They had been dating about two years and the couple can be seen together early next year in the murder mystery The Flying Dutchman.

Reno residents won't have to wait that long. Steigers new wife will accompany him to this weekend's festival.

Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin will proclaim Friday Rod Steiger Day during a 2 p.m. ceremony at the Bubinga Lounge in the Eldorado. That event is closed to the public, but later that night, Steiger will offer introductions to two of his films On the Waterfront and The Harder They Fall at the Century Riverside 12.

This is Steigers fifth marriage; Benedict was a widow.
